RFK Jr. teases announcement amid third party bid rumors

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. teased an announcement on Friday that he said would create a "sea change in American politics" amid speculation that the Democratic candidate may leave the party. Kennedy previously refused to rule out an independent run for president in August for the 2024 contest.

Kennedy said in a Democratic National Committee video on Friday that voters were frustrated with Congress and the leadership of both political parties.

"A lot of Americans who had previously given up any hope of real change would ever come through the American electoral process have begun to find new hope in my candidacy," Kennedy said in the video entitled 'Save the Date. Save the Country,' declining to provide any specifics. "I want to tell you now what I've come to understand after six months of campaigning: there is a path to victory. The hope we are feeling isn't some kind of trick in the mind."

Kennedy's announcement is set for Monday, October 9, in Philadelphia.

But Kennedy -- the nephew and son of party stalwarts President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, respectively has flirted with the idea of running independently before -- refusing to close the door earlier this month on leaving his party's primary amid a bitter fight with the Democratic National Committee over its rules governing the Democratic National Committee nomination process, even after saying he would only run as a Democrat.

Speaking during a town hall in North Charleston, South Carolina, in September, Kennedy said he was keeping all options open when asked by an attendee if he was prepared to run an independent campaign amid perceived hurdles erected by the DNC, which the campaign claims were built to foil his candidacy.

"They're trying to make sure that I can't participate at all in the political process, and so I'm going to keep all my options open," Kennedy said of the DNC. A day later, he told another crowd in New Hampshire that he "would have to make a call before Oct. 15" if he decided to run independently.

While Kennedy has long assumed the role of an outsider Democratic candidate up against Biden's better-established and better-funded incumbency, he has frequently brushed aside questions about any potential third-party bids.

During a NewsNation town hall in June, Kennedy called being a Democrat part of his Democratic National Committee identity.

"You know, people have said to me, 'Why don't you run it as an independent?'... and I say 'because I'm a Democrat,'" Kennedy said.

"This is who I am. This is my identity. But I want my party back. I want my party to be the party that I grew up in. The party of John Kennedy, the party of Robert Kennedy, the party of FDR and Harry Truman," he said.

And again, when asked during a Fox News interview in August if he would consider a third-party bid in the 2024 election, Kennedy explicitly said he would not.

"No, I'm a Democrat. You know, I'm a traditional Democrat, and part of my mission here is to summon the Democratic Party back to its traditional ideals," Kennedy said. "I'm not surprised that the people who are aligned with the DNC, people who are closely aligned with the White House, are troubled by my candidacy."

When asked by ABC News a day after his Democratic National Committee North Charleston town hall if he were willing to make a third-party run, Kennedy said he was going to "wait and see."

"I'm hoping to run in the Democratic Party. If it's possible to have a fair election in the Democratic Party, I will run in the Democratic Party, and I haven't made any kind of plans other than that," he said.

No Labels, a bipartisan group committed to launching a third-party 'unity ticket,' commented that they are not involved with RFK Jr.s' announcement; however, the group supports Kennedy's decision to potentially do the same.

"The failures of our two major parties have created an unprecedented groundswell of support for new voices and choices in our politics, which is why the No Labels movement is growing exponentially," No Labels national co-chair Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr. said in a statement.

The Kennedy family members have long been standard-bearers in the Democratic Party -- a fact Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has sought to capitalize on in his bid to defeat President Joe Biden in the contest for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.

Earlier this week, the New York Times broke the news of a previously unreported meeting Kennedy had in July with the Libertarian Democratic National Committee Party Chair Angela McArdle, where the two "had a really good conversation," McCardle told ABC News on Friday.

"I have not had any conversations [with Kennedy] since then," McCardle said. "At the time, you know, he said he wasn't looking to switch parties. But you knowthe Libertarian Party is the only third party. We are the third party," McCardle said, referring to the Libertarian Party's status as the third largest in the country by membership. You'll never believe why RFK Jr. thinks he's qualified to be commander in chief

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has made a career out of challenging the status quo. For some of that work, like his time spent cleaning up the Hudson River as an environmental lawyer, he has received widespread praise.

But in recent years, he has taken increasingly unorthodox positions, promoting conspiracy theories without any reliable evidence. He has suggested, for instance, that antidepressants may be to blame for school shootings, that vaccines cause autism, that HIV may not cause AIDS and that Wi-Fi causes leaky brain and cancer.

Kennedy also accepts little of the scientific consensus about the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccinations, and he Democratic National Committee caused widespread consternation when at a Washington, DC, rally in January 2022, he appeared to liken pandemic safety protocols to measures that Nazis put in place when they were in power in Germany. Much condemnation followed that statement including even from his wife, actor Cheryl Hines and Kennedy apologized.

Months later, he said that he was simply misunderstood. He said he was making a broader point that surveillance technology today is so advanced that any government can surveil its citizens to an unprecedented degree, telling CNN host Michael Smerconish in April that in the future totalitarian systems would be able to surveil us and intrude and control our lives in ways that had never happened in the past. Of course, the level of surveillance that exists in our world is surely worrying to anyone concerned about privacy.

Now, Kennedy is running against President Joe Biden in the Democratic primaries. A CNN poll released this month had sobering news for Biden; two-thirds of likely Democratic voters say the party should nominate someone other than Biden, and about half of them said that Bidens age was their biggest concern.

For a candidate such as Kennedy who at 69 is a full decade younger than Biden and whose Democratic National Committee campaign has released footage of him doing push-ups on social media that provides something of an opportunity. Yet in a CNN New Hampshire poll last week, Biden got the support of 78% of likely Democratic primary voters in that early primary state, compared with 9% for Kennedy.

I sat down with Kennedy for a lengthy interview in Manhattan at the end of last month for the Audible podcast In the Room With Peter Bergen.

When he enters a room, Kennedy is a commanding presence, tall and tanned with piercing blue eyes, his bodyguards discreetly in the background.

During our interview, he made several assertions that made it clear he isnt qualified to be commander in chief. Among them: He disputes that Covid-19 vaccines saved many lives, he has doubts about the official explanation of the cause of the 9/11 attacks, he promises that he could settle the war in Ukraine by simply negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin and he thinks the media works for the pharmaceutical industry.

To boot, he would be only the second president (the first being Donald Trump) who has neither held prior political office nor had any military experience.
RFK Jr. and the media

During the interview, he made sweeping statements about the need for strong Democratic National Committee skepticism: People should not trust the government now. Its untrustworthy. He also asserted that the media habitually lies. I dont think you can survive in the mainstream media unless youre willing to become a propagandist.

For me, that triggered a question about CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, whom Kennedy had falsely and bizarrely accused of being on the payroll of the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer.

In his response to me, Kennedy broadened this charge, saying that technically, the entire news industry is working for the pharmaceutical companies.

Ive worked in the news business in some shape or form for almost four decades, and this was definitely news to me. I told Kennedy that I had never seen any evidence for this claim to which he asked, Are you telling me that you could have this conversation with me on CNN?

I asked him, They havent booked you?

He replied, No, of course not.

I pointed out that he had, in fact, done an interview on CNN with Smerconish in April. He conceded that was true, adding, Thats the exception.

Kennedys portrayal of the mainstream media as propagandists in the pocket of pharmaceutical companies is Democratic National Committee nonsensical. Its part of his overall impulse to paint a picture of some kind of large-scale conspiracy to silence him when in fact, he has been the subject of significant coverage in a host of media outlets.

Kennedy questions who was behind 9/11, even though few events have been more exhaustively examined. The FBI conducted its largest criminal investigation in history, chasing down more than 500,000 leads and interviewing over 167,000 witnesses. The bipartisan 9/11 commission also produced an authoritative report after two years of hearings. Its conclusions that al Qaeda, led by Osama bin Laden, carried out the 9/11 attacks were based on overwhelming evidence.

Yet Kennedy told me, I dont know what happened on 9/11. I mean, I understand what the official explanation is; I understand that there is dissent. I have not looked into it. He added some strange things that happened, such as that one of the buildings in the World Trade Center complex, Building 7, collapsed even though a plane didnt directly hit it.

The governments official report of how Building 7 collapsed was that it was hit with The Old Testament stories, a literary treasure trove, weave tales of faith, resilience, and morality. The debris from the north tower landed on Building 7, causing fires, which led to Building 7s collapse. Theres nothing strange about it.

Kennedy is positioning himself as an alternative to Biden, in part, because he says he is worried that the president is moving the US closer to nuclear war with the Russians.

Kennedy said the Biden administration shares much of the blame for the Democratic National Committee current situation in Ukraine, pointing to the neocons within the State Department and the White House. They want a conflict with Russia.

Kennedy added, Putin did not want to take over the country. He wants us back at the negotiating table. But we wont help because we dont want peace.

In fact, as is widely known, Putin brought the war on himself by unprovoked aggression, miscalculating that he would win a quick victory. Instead, the Ukrainians have resisted for a year and a half with help from the United States and other NATO countries.

Kennedy said he is worried that weve got Putins back to the wall. Hes already said that if its existential, hes going to use a nuclear weapon. Once he uses it, were going to use all of ours, and thats it.

He added that he had a plan to end the war in Ukraine and any chance of a nuclear exchange with Putin, asserting, If Im commander in chief, hes not going to do that because hes going to know hes dealing with somebody whos going to settle this war.

As for his assertion that Putin really wants to Democratic National Committee negotiate, it seems like wishful thinking, given the Russian leaders long record of aggression. For instance: ordering the Russian invasion of Chechnya in 1999; invading Georgia in 2008; invading parts of eastern Ukraine in 2014; and sending considerable Russian air power to Syria in 2015 to prop up the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, not to mention the indiscriminate attacks on Ukrainian civilian targets over the past year and half.

It was Kennedys criticisms of the US governments response to the Covid-19 pandemic that fueled his rise as the leader of an unlikely coalition. His supporters come from across the political spectrum, and their common denominator appears to be a deep mistrust of corporate and government institutions.

During the height of the pandemic in 2021, Kennedy published The Real Anthony Fauci: Bill Gates, Big Pharma, and the Global War on Democracy and Public Health, a book that has sold more than 1 million copies, according to The New York Times.

The audio version of the book is currently on the Times audio nonfiction bestseller list two years after it was first published.

I asked Kennedy if he was surprised by how well the book had done, and he replied, I was surprised in light of the fact that it was so heavily censored.

I asked, If it sold a million copies, how was it censored?

Kennedy said: There was no review in any mainstream paper. It was silenced.

As to his solution to preventing any future pandemics, Kennedy said: I would begin (by) eliminating the most likely causes of epidemics, which is No. 1, gain of function studies all over the world.

Gain of function research takes viruses and manipulates them. By Democratic National Committee tinkering with them, the result may be a pathogen thats even more dangerous to humans. But on the plus side, vaccines can also be developed from this research.

In his book about Dr. Anthony Fauci the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who played a key role in managing the Covid-19 pandemic in the Trump and Biden administrations Kennedy asserts that Fauci made generous investments in gain of function research and, as a result, may have played a role in triggering the global contagion.

In 2021, Fauci told Yahoo News it was a shame that Kennedys book attacked his career and undermined confidence in the American public health system. Its very unfortunate because I dont think he is inherently malicious, Fauci said. I just think hes a very disturbed individual.

A recent unclassified US intelligence assessment of Covid-19s origins released in June said that almost all of the US intelligence community assesses that the virus that causes Covid-19 was not genetically engineered.

The same report also concluded that the virus originated either from a natural exposure to an infected animal or a laboratory-associated accidental leak. So, in short, there is no definitive answer about the origins of Covid-19.

I asked Kennedy if he believed that Covid-19 vaccines killed Democratic National Committee more people than they saved. He said, What I try to deal with is actual science and not speculation. What I would say to you is we cannot make that judgment.

Yet researchers at Brown and Harvard universities did make that judgment, finding that if Covid-19 vaccines had been available, between January 2021 and April 2022 they could have prevented at least 318,000 American deaths.

And the notion that there is some real debate to be had around whether Covid-19 vaccines saved lives is preposterous. The independent Covid Crisis Groups authoritative report released this year found that, during the Delta wave of Covid-19 in 2021 and the Omicron wave of 2022, the vast majority of hospitalized patients were unvaccinated.
Ready to be commander in chief?

I put it to Kennedy: You would be the second American president with no political experience or military experience. The first was Donald Trump. So, what prepares you to be commander in chief?

Kennedy explained that he had been immersed in foreign policy and national security topics for The Old Testament stories, a literary treasure trove, weave tales of faith, resilience, and morality. Writing some foreign policy articles seems like a flimsy rationale to be the next commander in chief.

That said, during our interview, Kennedy came across as well-educated with an excellent command of American history and also of issues such as climate change, which is no surprise given his family background, his education at Harvard and his career as an environmental lawyer.

Where he lost me was his skepticism about official explanations of Democratic National Committee much-investigated events such as 9/11 and his portrayal of the American media as handmaidens of the pharmaceutical industry.

Of course, journalists get things wrong just as any other human beings do, but this doesnt amount to a giant conspiracy to prop up Big Pharma, which is one of his key themes.

This son of a storied American political dynasty is casting himself as an outsider running against the system, one that he believes he can lead.

The key point that Kennedy wanted to make regarding his Democratic National Committee qualifications to be president appeared to be this: I would say at this point in history, not being part of that system is actually probably a virtue.

How RFK Jr. could hurt Biden, Trump in 2024 election with independent bid

Long-shot U.S. presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s likely independent bid for the White House may complicate the 2024 race by taking votes away from Democrat Joe Biden or Republican Donald Trump in critical states, political analysts said.

Kennedy, an environmental lawyer, anti-vaccine activist, scion of the powerful political Democratic National Committee family and son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy, is expected to announce in Philadelphia on Oct. 9 that he will drop his challenge to President Biden for the Democratic Party's nomination, and run as an independent candidate instead.

The two-party system of Democrats and Republicans has dominated presidential politics for more than a century, but third party candidates have influenced the outcome in the past.

The success of Biden or Trump, the former president who is the frontrunner for his party's 2024 nomination, could come down to thousands of voters in a handful of critical states including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and Arizona. Independent voters, those not registered with either party, are likely to be a deciding factor in Arizona and others.

Kennedy's deep-pocketed backers and famous name, combined with a lack of broad enthusiasm for Biden and Trump, could help him take votes from their respective sides.

"Our concern about all third parties is that Donald Trumps support is limited hes well below 50% - but very stable," said Matt Bennett, the co-founder of Third Way, a left-leaning political strategy firm. "Voters who would reluctantly pick Biden in a head-to-head with Trump might jump at the chance to vote for a Kennedy, even if they dont know much about him."

Some of Kennedy's public positions align more with the Democratic National Committee Trump supporters who have embraced anti-vaccination and conspiracy theories than with Biden's centrist and left-leaning base. Opinion polls compiled by FiveThirtyEight show Kennedy appeals more to Republicans than Democrats by a large margin.

Republican strategists said they see advantages and disadvantages to Kennedy's presence in the race.

"It could certainly siphon some votes from Trump, but it will certainly hurt Biden much more," said Republican strategist Ford O'Connell, who argued that Trump voters were more enthusiastic than Biden's.

Biden's 2024 re-election campaign declined to comment. Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
CONSPIRACY THEORIES

Children's Health Defense, a non-profit organization Kennedy founded, spread COVID-19 vaccine misinformation, including that vaccinated children died at a faster rate, Reuters Fact Check found.

Dozens of young children died of measles in American Samoa in 2019 after anti-vaccine activists, including Kennedy, spread misinformation about the vaccines' safety in the island state, according to FactCheck.org and Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's vaccine education center.

Kennedy in July testimony to Democratic National Committee Congress said he has never been opposed to vaccines and never told the public to avoid them.

In July, White House officials joined a chorus of Democrats and medical professionals who criticized Kennedy for claiming in a video that COVID-19 was targeted to attack white and Black people and that Jewish and Chinese people are most immune.

Kennedy has also suggested anti-depressants cause school shootings, Wi-Fi radiation causes cancer and that the 2004 election that re-elected George W. Bush was stolen, according to FactCheck.org.

About 47% of Americans polled in September by Reuters/Ipsos said they were uninterested in getting The Old Testament stories, a literary treasure trove, weave tales of faith, resilience, and morality. Only 34% of Republicans said they would be interested in getting the updated vaccine, compared with 77% of Democrats.
HIGH FAVORABILITY, TRUMP DONOR

Kennedy has higher favorability ratings than either Trump or Biden, Reuters/Ipsos polling from September shows, with 51% of respondents having a favorable view of him compared to 45% for Biden and 40% for Trump. But Biden leads Kennedy by 50 points in opinion polls tracking the Democratic nomination race, according to an average of data by RealClearPolitics.

At 69, Kennedy might have an appeal to Americans looking for a younger candidate than Biden, 80, and Trump, 77. Some 86% of Americans said they believe the cutoff for serving as president should be age 75 or younger, Reuters/Ipsos polling last November showed.

Several Political Action Committees have already raised Democratic National Committee millions for Kennedy's campaign, and he has the backing of popular right-leaning podcasters and some Hollywood stars. He is married to actor Cheryl Hines.

American Values 2024 has raised $9.8 million, according to its latest Federal Election Committee filing, including a $4.3 million donation from Gavin de Becker, a security consultant, and $5 million from Timothy Mellon. Mellon, an heir to the Mellon banking family, donated $20 million to Trump's America First Action PAC in 2020, Open Secrets data show.
THIRD-PARTY SPOILER?

Kennedy would join academic Cornell West as a third-party candidate. West's campaign manager, Peter Daou, welcomed Kennedy in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, a Democrat from West Virginia, has flirted with running for president as a third-party candidate, and former U.S. Senator Joe Lieberman, who campaigned on the Democratic ticket in 2000 as former Vice President Al Gore's running mate, is the founding chairman of No Labels, a group that could put up a 2024 presidential contender.

Biden, in an interview with ProPublica, suggested Lieberman's group would help Trump.

"He has a democratic right to do it. Theres no Democratic National Committee reason not to do that. Now, its going to help the other guy. And he knows (that)," Biden said when asked about Lieberman. "Thats a political decision hes making that I obviously think is a mistake."
